Here's the coolest news in Web3 Art...

What’s up, Eminent fam? Boy, do we have a lot to share this week!

We’ve been diving into layers of photography collage, musing on the cultural shift that is Jack Butcher’s unique twist on PFP art, and drooling over some incredible finds on FND 🌐

Did You Miss Our Twitter Spaces?

We hosted some banger panel discussions on Monday, July 17. One was with Alex Kittoe and the other was with Austin // lordofthecats. Both artists have been digging a certain style lately, and they shared a bit of the process with us. The results look absolutely incredible.

It’s fascinating to learn how images of textures, such as crumbled paper or bricks, can be layered onto photos to create depth, express emotion, and explore certain motifs.

We love this collaborative piece by Alex Kittoe and Holly Herbert titled ‘Slowly Drifting.’ The delightful blend of detailed elements, soft pink hues, and carefully edited nature shots all coalesce into a harmonious whole.

Jack Butcher’s Latest Release

Everybody knows PFP art is speculative. Some artists shun it altogether in protest of the hyper-commercial nature of on-chain art in popular media coverage. For Jack Butcher, this presented a unique challenge worth tackling.

With the release of his Visualize Value series in Q1 2023, Jack became a household name. His Opepen Edition collection was a resounding success, symbolizing a shift in Web3’s minting culture. Unlike most projects, Jack Butcher’s open editions are super affordable (under $2 before gas fees), and the market ultimately decides the supply.

Last week, Jack released a new collection inspired by NotThreadGuy’s signature Mutant Ape PFP. The collection is open to mint forever, with all proceeds going to the Web3 content creator — an industry first. In a space where influential individuals often throw their audiences under the bus for a quick buck, the success of this collaboration is a welcome development.

Not only was the launch a commercial success, but it also inspired art tributes from the likes of Beeple, 0xDesigner, Sarah Script, Jeff Jag, and Jacob Horne. The artist also released an online tool that allows anyone to create their own Opepen-themed art. Judging by the flood of Opepen JPEGs on our feed through the week, we’d say it was a pretty fun experience!

W1Curates Takes London

Right at the heart of Oxford, a team of big brains are hard at work to promote and sustain contemporary art. The modus operandi of choice is fostering new artistic trends by delivering top notch projects in art, fashion, and music. This past week was no different.

In collaboration with Wimbledon and Andy Murray, the art platform exhibited ‘The Exposition,’ an open edition collection by the iconic generative artist, Refik Anadol. Marking the Tennis superstar’s 10th career anniversary, the significant provenance of this collection cannot be overemphasized.

Selected works by Kid Eight are also going on exhibition at W1Curates through the month of July, while Fvckrender will be exhibiting through the month of August. Find more information about their events here.

Art Spotlight 🔍

Last week, we were itching to see some new art, so we put out a call for submissions. You guys went crazy, flooding our comments section with amazing artwork that blew us away. That was easily the highlight of our week on Twitter, tbh.

This piece by Victoria West, titled ‘VITA,’ caught our attention.

It’s an audio-visual reminder of our fragile mortality, rendered with such grace and brilliance that it delicately conveys the poignant message.

We love how Victoria’s work transcends the bounds of what photography can and should be. It’s only right that such a powerful work of art should live forever on the blockchain.
