Can You Feel The Buzz?

The Web3 art scene has been heating up lately. Here’s all you need to know.

It’s been a busy month for Web3 art. The scene has been buzzing with historic events ranging from record-breaking sales to global brand initiatives.

Let’s run through the most juicy tidbits of information that should be on your radar:

Sotheby’s Metaverse “Grails” Auction

Sotheby’s held an auction for select pieces from its “Grails” collection.

Featuring high-caliber pieces from renowned series, extraordinary collections of works by specific artists, and rare pieces that have hitherto been virtually unheard of on the public market, this was a highly anticipated event.

Dmitri Cherniak’s Ringers #879 a.k.a. “the Goose,” absolutely stole the show. The winning bid was placed by Punk 6529 for $6.2 million. This makes it the second-highest Sotheby’s sale of all time for a work of generative art.

Other rare pieces that went up for auction include:

  • Tyler Hobbs’ small-scale Fidenza #725

  • Larva Labs’ Zombie CryptoPunk #6649

  • Snowfro’s full spectrum Chromie Squiggle #1780

  • Cube Archetype #397 by Kjetil Golid

Mercedes Benz NXT Genesis NFT Collection

The global automobile brand, Mercedes-Benz, has made a thoughtful debut into web3. This was marked by the launch of “Maschine,” the first core collection of the “NXT” ecosystem.

But why are we so excited about “Maschine?”

Well, to start with, it is the fruit of a collaborative effort between Mercedes-Benz NXT, Fingerprints DAO, and Harm Van Den Dorpel. The latter is a prolific artist known for his generative works that are constantly evolving.

The collection features 1,000 unique pieces inspired by the “wagon-wheel” effect, drawing us into a world of spinning and spiraling visual illusions. Motion, velocity, and perception are the dominant themes of “Maschine.”

It’s clear that this move was intended to attract collectors who value luxury experiences. With a web3-native core team, this rollout was quite impressive.
